Cutthroat Defense Drill

another fantastic video showing a great defensive drill for developing a defensive mindset. Comes from the FIBA World video collection

Involvement

How do you get kids involved in your program? Right now I am teaching at a public school in Washington (Skykomish School) that has a K-12 enrollment of 36. We have 8 high school students, 7 female, 1 male. I want to try and start the girls' basketball program, but I am not sure how to best convince these ladies to buy into what a girls' basketball team can bring them. We are losing 1 senior girl, gaining 1 8th grade girl, and 2 seventh grade girls are moving up to 8th grade, which means we can put them on the team as well.
All 7 of our girls played on the volleyball team last fall, and did quite well, advancing to the district tournament for the first time in many years. A couple of the girls have (freely) admitted that basketball is "too much running" for them.

THAT KILLS ME.

I'm trying to create a culture up here that embraces opportunity for involvement and activities that can be enjoyable.

How do you convince potential athletes to come out?

Getting the shots you want vs. zones

How often does your team face zone defenses? It seems to be the current trend in high level basketball that teams are relying more and more on zone defenses to change the pace and tempo of games.

Attached here are some ideas on attacking zones. There are some "actions" you can run vs a 2-3, 1-2-2, or 1-3-1 zone to get shots.

Been away awhile

I've been away from my blog for a long time. I have been lucky enough to have been teaching and athletic directing at a small school in Washington state. I haven't had a lot of time to post my thoughts and share things that I have put together. I'm going to try and put more useful things for basketball coaches on my blog.

But for now, I wanted to share a couple of fantastic resources:

First is the Men's Basketball Hoop Scoop. It's a blog with hundreds (maybe thousands) of downloads of coaching information. Coach Peterman does a fantastic job of obtaining information and distributing it.

Another is Coach Preheim's Blog. I have "stolen" a few things from this amazing collection of information as well.

Finally, Coach Wayne Walters invented the SWARM defense. It's an innovative way of playing defense. I have purchased materials from Coach Walters, and it is Top-Notch. He also has free materials in the "purchase materials" section!
Check out SWARM Enterprises!

Keep your eyes on this blog for some more x's and o's
